Raising a Reader is a proven early literacy and family engagement program that is based on more than 25 years of early childhood development research. The program’s mission is to foster healthy brain development, develop and enhance early literacy and language skills, promote and strengthen family engagement, and develop, promote and foster intrinsic reading motivation.

In addition, parents receive training in research-based practices to develop the habit of sharing books; children bring home a Red Book Bag each week filled with award-winning books to practice the habit of sharing books; and families are connected with libraries to maintain the habit of borrowing and sharing books.

The Wayne County Public Library coordinates the program and efforts of other community agencies working on early childhood literacy. For more information, call 919-735-1824.
