Safe Kids Wayne County is dedicated to the prevention of accidental childhood injuries. The chapter couples public outreach and awareness efforts with hands-on educational activities for children and their families. The aim of Safe Kids is to involve and educate the community in childhood safety issues. One of the main focus areas of this chapter is child passenger safety through car seat checks.

Did You Know?
Injuries are the second leading cause of hospitalization and the leading cause of emergency room visits among children under age 14.
Each year, approximately 1,800 children ages 14 and under are killed as occupants in motor vehicles, and more than 280,000 are injured.
43 children, ranging in age from 2 months to 14 years, died from heatstroke or suspected heatstroke while left in cars in 2013.
500 children ages 14 and under are seen in emergency rooms for heat exhaustion in cars each year, based on annualized estimates from 2008 to 2010.
Heatstroke is the number one cause of non‐ crash, vehicle‐related death in children ages 14 and under.
The annual cost of child injury deaths in the United States is an estimated $34.5 billion (US dollars).
A correctly installed and used child safety seat reduces the risk of death by 71% for infants. However, it is estimated that the majority (approx. 82%) of children who are placed in child safety seats are improperly restrained.
Is your child’s car seat installed correctly? Call us to have your seat checked.
Avoid paying $238 for having an improperly installed car seat!
