Safe Kids Wayne County is dedicated to the prevention of accidental childhood injuries. The coalition couples public outreach and awareness efforts with hands-on educational activities for children and their families. The aim of Safe Kids is to involve and educate the community in childhood safety issues. One of the main focus areas of this coalition is child passenger safety through car seat checks.

760 children have died due to pediatric vehicular heatstroke since 1998. Data from www.noheatstroke.org.
500 children ages 19 and under are seen in emergency rooms for heat exhaustion in cars each year, based on annualized estimates from 2008 to 2010.
Heatstroke is the number one cause of non‐crash, vehicle‐related death in children ages 19 and under.
The annual cost of child injury deaths in the United States is an estimated $34.5 billion (US dollars).
A correctly installed and used child safety seat reduces the risk of death by 71% for infants. However, it is estimated that the majority (approx. 82%) of children who are placed in child safety seats are improperly restrained.
